City Canyons Joins with Music & Words for International Release of Album of Dead Can Dance Percussionist

(PRWEB) January 24, 2005

City Canyons Records announces with great pleasure its newly signed agreement with the Netherlands?s independent label, Music & Words to release and distribute Peter Ulrich's new album "Enter the Mysterium" throughout the United States and Europe. Release is set for March 1 in the United States.

Hans Peters, co-president of Music & Words remarked ?I am looking forward to the joint effort with City Canyons, one of America's rising new indie labels, to further the music of one of the most creative and original recording artists on today's music scene through this international release".

Music & Words celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2005 having released more than 160 albums specializing in roots based music including musical areas like folk and Celtic, blues, Cajun, klezmer, African, Caribbean and Asian music ranging in musical style from ethnic to rock. While newcomer City Canyons Records has released three albums, Jen Elliott and Bluestruck?s "The Secret's Out", Finnish group Valerian?s "Intimations of Sorrow" and UK rocker David Steele?s "Underneath the Ice", the U.S. indie label has definitely become a presence on the international music scene with its upcoming release with Music & Words of "Enter the Mysterium".

Prior to "Enter the Mysterium", Peter Ulrich was perhaps best known for his long-time collaboration with Dead Can Dance, the fabulously creative band of the eighties that explored new frontiers of music exploring world, folk, darkwave and a wealth of other forms. Ulrich joined the group in 1983 and appeared on albums like "Garden of Arcane Delights", "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun" and "Spiritchaser," and was a touring member of the group until 1990.

Ulrich also collaborated on Ivo Watts-Russell's "This Mortal Coil" project, contributing the song "At First, And Then" to Filigree And Shadow, and also played on the legendary label 4AD with labelmates Michael Brook and the Wolfgang Press as an incidental percussionist. Ulrich's "Pathways & Dawns", released on Projekt Records in 1999, featured former Dead Can Dance bandmate Brendan Perry as a producer and arranger. Delighted reviewers of "Pathways & Dawns" compared Ulrich's work to medieval madrigals, baroque exotica, Todd Rundgren and Brian Eno all in the same sentence, a tribute to the infinite variety of Ulrich's music.

"Enter the Mysterium" is similarly diverse but with brilliant pop influences that should cause it, while losing none of its stunning originality, to appeal to a broader audience. Mysterium features words and music by Ulrich, vocals by Ulrich and Ulrich playing both traditional instruments and a selection of exotic instruments from all over the world.

Ulrich's music in Mysterium recalls Dead Can Dance but has an exotic flavor of its own, blending seamlessly an array of musical genres--art pop, dream-pop, ancient and medieval music, new age, world and ethnic music and darkwave -- into a lush tapestry. But words cannot explain that music to understand it, you must enter Ulrich's world of light and shadow, a world of black and white magic, a world haunting, mysterious, sometimes frightening but in the end uplifting--a world powerfully mapped out in Ulrich's new album.

As an added treat, particularly for those who have tired of the pabulum that passes for music on commercial radio, the release of "Enter the Mysterium" coincides with the reuniting of Dead Can Dance for a world tour this spring. Surely the rebirth of creative, risk-taking new music will be as refreshing and warming to some music-lovers' hearts as that first spring flower poking through the frost.

For more information on "Enter the Mysterium", including advance copies of the CD for review, full press kits with photographs and opportunities for interviews, please contact Katherine Brodsky, Random Minds, PR, 604-725-5449 or e-mail info@random-minds.com. The City Canyons Records website may be visited at http://www.citycanyons.com.

The Music & Words website may be visited at http://www.musicwords.nl. Distribution opportunities outside the U.S. and Europe are presently available for "Enter the Mysterium".

Oktober Zero Releases New Album 'The Art of Raw' November 8th on Raptivism Records

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 25, 2005

NYC lyricist Oktober Zero returns Nov. 8th with a profound lyrical barrage -- "The Art of Raw". Hailing from the birthplace of hip-hop, the South Bronx, Oktober Zero is known for releases such as "Less Than Zero" and "Projekt:Building". Originally put on by underground legend Bobbito Garcia aka DJ Cucumber Slice, Oktober Zero was briefly part of the group "2 for 5" with Ace Lover. His single "Reset The Game" with J-Live is an underground classic, and "The Art of Raw" is filled with similar jewels.

A mystical theme runs through "The Art of Raw", with Oktober featured on the cover with images traditionally associated with Santeria, theAfro-Christian syncretic religion. Oktober's style is syncretic too; from street tales like "Twelve Cops Shot" to spiritual tales like "Muero Otro Dia (Die Another Day)" to "Black Magic Chick", the multi-layered flavors of the Bronx is present all at once through the whole album.

Produced exclusively by the UK's Q-Tones, "The Art of Raw" is also an example of how raw hip-hop is melding with the sophisticated technologies of tomorrow. Q-Tones and Oktober recorded the whole album without ever meeting each other via use of the internet.

Philosophical b-boys and girls, fans of boom bap, and lyrical heads will all appreciate the latest offering from the Bronx's youngest son.

Christopher Completes Mixing of Next Album, Announces Title and Tracklisting

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) July 15, 2006

Toronto based solo artist Christopher issued the following release:

'After 5 years, the follow up to "wer Next Projekt" is complete. The follow-up album is called "Smoke and Origination". The mixdown was completed on June 25th and it is being mastered this week. We're hoping for a late October/Early November release.'

Describing the sound of the album:

'If music had feet, it would kick your ass. But music doesn't. Therefore, you're safe. It's lop sided, it's clumsy, it's a confused bullying child. The best comparison I can come up with is that it's a "Pet Sounds" style of record. Risks were taken, for better, for worse. Unlike "wer Next Projekt," this isn't an industrial meets world music album. This is a loosely conceptual piece that has more in common with artists like Porcupine Tree & Opeth.'

Clocking in at just under 70 minutes, Smoke and Origination is an ambitious work for listeners tired of the usual retro-obsessed pap of the mainstream.

'The album is in one key, but this wasn't a conscious effort initially. It didn't take very long to notice that that was to be one of the "themes" of the record. So I went with it. It was a challenge to write a whole album in one key and have it be interesting to hear.'

Tracklisting is as follows:

1. The Summoning Vector

2. This is Your Plague

3. Sunday is Falling Apart

4. The Following Vision Was Staged

5. Spaghetti Terrorist

6. Sharp Knives

7. Frailty Scan

8. Purpose?

9. An Addendum

10. Wraith's Progress

11. Derivative Hearts

12. Again

Christopher released `wer Next Projekt' in 2001. In the interim he has been scoring soundtracks, auditioned to replace JP Lepp?luoto in Poisonblack in 2004, and released a mailing list only compilation called `Abandoned in Situ' in 2006.

5th Projekt Releases Debut Album CiRCADiAN

(PRWEB) August 6, 2006

Toronto?s 5th Projekt is releasing its debut full length album CiRCADiAN with a CD Release Party at the Horseshoe on August 29, 2006. 5th Projekt received positive recognition from three previous EP?s including gaining the attention of Los Angeles artist/producer Ken Andrews (Failure, A Perfect Circle, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) who mixed CiRCADiAN.

5th Projekt?s debut album, which will be released on its own label, Organik Rekords, was recorded at Toronto's Chemical Sound with James Heidebrecht (Daniel Lanois, Sarah Slean, Sloan). CiRCADiAN takes on the themes of balance and discovery. "In A Coma," sets the pace for the dreamlike lyrical exploration and the atmospheric compositions that characterize the album. In "One to Throw Away," the central theme of disdain for the blatant disregard of ecosystems, both within ourselves and in the world around us, comes to light while the music paints a backdrop of darkness. As the multi-layered "Resistance" tells us "they appear as quickly as they escape these dreams and revelations." And so do the images conjured up by the songs, elusive as d?j? vu. If any of it rings true or strikes a chord in the psyche of any one listener, then CiRCADiAN's cycle is complete.

5th Projekt features Tara Rice (voice, guitar, words and programming), Sk?dt D. McNalty (guitar, voice, words and programming) and Peter Broadley (bass). The group?s previous EPs, which 5th Projekt refers to as demos, resulted in being included as a Showcase feature in Canadian Musician Magazine, nominated for Best Alternative Artist at the Toronto Independent Music Awards and Montreal's CJLO FM ranked their DEMOn001 in the top ten EPs of 2004. The song "Skepticosm" found its way, while still in demo mode, onto the Anti-Hit List, a very influential "Alternative Top 10" compiled by music writer John Sakamoto. 5th Projekt was also featured on CBC Radio DJ Sook-Yin Lee's Definitely Not the Opera as Independent Artist of the Week.

5th PROJEKT Release Debut Album 'CiRCADiAN'

(PRWEB) September 8, 2006

Canadian cinematic ensemble 5th Projekt are set to release their full-length debut album, released on 29th August 2006 on Organik Rekords.

A CD release party, taking place at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto on August 29th at 10:00 pm, will accompany the release, in association with The EDGE presents Nu Music Nite. (CFNY 102.1 FM Toronto).

A unique band, 5th Projekt is comprised of three musicians who have an unparalleled pool of experience between them, having played with many significant artists. Since joining forces, the band won numerous awards and accolades, among them a nomination for Best Alternative Artist in the 2005 Toronto Music Awards. Already the upcoming album's track 'Oblivion' has won an incredible 17 awards in Alternative Rock, including Best Female Vocal and Best Mood for consecutive weeks, as well as hitting 3rd spot on the KIAC Big 50 (internet radio) after eight weeks in the charts.

Now the band, who have been dubbed "part goth, part folk, part drama, part spiritual," are capitalizing on the sweeping wave of acclaim that followed their 2005 EP 'The Tales of Don Quixote.' Songs on the EP were ubiquitous on Canadian radio, reaching number 7 on CFRC 101.9FM and the EP itself a six-week run in the Top 30 on Montreal's CJLO FM, following a request for an advanced copy.

The complexity of the music of 5th Projekt has most often been described as 'cinematic,' given the strong visual quality evoked by the songs. Easy summations of the group's sound and outlook are elusive, but this is understandable considering the diversity (and complexity) of artists they have been compared to: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Portishead, along with a host of other artists in the musical field of experiment. The new album 'CiRCADiAN', as they describe, offers music that at times abandons typical popular songwriting, but also pays homage to classical compositional structure. The album title refers to the daily cycles of nature, as well as the furious balancing of opposites that characterize life. At the mixing helm was Ken Andrews, formerly of the band 'Failure' who has worked with such artists as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and A Perfect Circle.

The opening track "In A Coma" sets the tone for the album, a dreamlike atmospheric composition that was singled out by John Sakamoto in the Toronto Star Anti-Hit List: "this haunting, relentlessly propulsive track could be an instrumental and it would still manage to articulate the essence of the lyrics: muffled panic, emotional numbness." Heavy stuff. "One To Throw Away" touches on the theme of failing eco-systems, in an emotional demand for a better world. The albums (over a thousand) that the band owns between them certainly seem to have inspired some interesting material.

Compliments from the rock journalism community have been innumerable. Julie Hunter of Tangible Sounds declares that 5th Projekt "have created a brand of music unlike any other." Karen Bliss of Canadian Musician calls the sound "haunting," whereas Wednesday Elektra of Space Junkies sums up 'Tales of Don Quixote' as "very surreal in its brilliant magical vocals, ethereal and delicate, female lulling that could put a baby to sleep."

5th Projekt came into being in 2003. Vocalist Tara Rice had released her solo album 'Face' that year on e.v.e Records, which was subsequently nominated for Best Folk Singer/Songwriter by the International Music Resource Group's Independent Music Awards. She is also contributing, with guitarist Sk?dt, to a project initiated by Ken Andrews called LADNA (Los Angeles Digital Noise Academy), along with such distinguished names as Charlotte Martin, Justin-Meldal Johnsen (Beck, Tori Amos) and Jordon Zadorozny (Abbey, Blinker the Star). Bassist Peter Broadley ? son of a songwriter father ? released an EP with The Leaving Projekt in 2002, entitled 'Inkomplete'. Sk?dt has released two full-length instrumental albums under the moniker Knell, before playing with Peter in The Leaving Projekt. "We never tried to create a certain type of music it just came out. Tara and myself are just different by nature," says Sk?dt of 5th Projekt's music.

The band has attended the 2005 North By Northeast Festival Showcase as well as The Canadian Music Week Showcase this year. They have already declared their intention "to be touring this vast and various world, sharing our music and visiting the cultures of the unique peoples that inhabit this planet."

For now, this, their first full album, will elate fans and converted critics. To further assert their independence, the album is released on their own label, Organik Rekords. Their "quest for our own unique and original sound" has taken a significant step towards completion.
